A complete but damaged lead-alloy token dating to the Post-Medieval period. This type of token is known as 'Lyon counter', and dates to the period c. AD 1575-1589. The obverse of the token depicts a crowned lion facing left, rampant, within a circular border in the form of a belt or garter. The legend set within the circular border (now largely illegible) would have originally read; 'HONI SOI QUI MAL Y PE', the motto of the order of the garter. The reverse of the token depicts the crowned arms of France (modern) between two crowned pillars. These pillars are themselves bordered by a pair of upright palm brances, a third of which is present under the exurgal line. Lyon counters are associated with the order of the Garter and in particular Henry III of France, who was invested as a member in 1575. See Mitchener 1988, no. 4584, and PAS records LON-C5DD59 and LVPL-41DB0D for comparable examples of this token type.
