Lead probable weight. A cast object formed by inserting a finger end into damp coarse sand, which has left a clear cast of the tip and fingernail of the maker's index finger. The shrinkage of the object on its upper side as cast shows it was made, as is to be expected with such an improvised technique, in an open mould. Densely patinated. The mass may suggest this distinctive object to have represented one averdepois ounce, though its interest now resides more in the personalised record of its maker which it embodies. This method was also used to make musket balls in case of need, a category of object oft-reported from the vicinity and perhaps to be associated with the Winceby campaign of 1643. Suggested date: Post-Medieval, 1500-1800.
