Cast lead-alloy spindle whorl, dating from the medieval period (AD1200-1500). The whorl has wide quite flat body with rim around the central perforation. One side of the wide flat body appears to be undecorated, but the other has raise lines radiating out from the central perforation. The central perforation has an internal diameter of 9.19mm. The surface of the whorl is worn with a powdery white patina.
Diameter: 29.1mm; thickness: 8.9mm; weight: 27g
Notes:
Lead weights of this form were commonly used throughout the Medieval and Post-Medieval period and are therefore difficult to date accurately. Examples of spindle whorls have reportedly been found in contexts dated from the Roman through to the Post-Medieval period although the majority are typically dated broadly to the medieval period c.1100-1500.
