HARNESS MOUNT

Unique ID: PUBLIC-D40FD9

Object type certainty: Certain
Workflow status: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation

A complete copper alloy pendant hanger or suspension mount from a horse harness pendant, dating from the medival period (c.AD1200-1500).

The cruciform shaped hanger is sub-triangular in form with a flat back face, from which each bar has a projecting curved prong whih would have secured the mount to the leather harness. The downward pillar of the cross terminates in double loops through which an iron pin (which is corroded into place) would have passed, thus suspending the pendant..

The mount is 19.94mm long, 20.97mm wide, and in total 9.24mm thick. It weighs 4.64g.

Harness pendant suspension loops with integral lugs are rather unusual and dating comes from the more usual examples, it is likely that this type is more narrowly date due to being far less common. For similar example see: IOW-609EE1.
