A hardly worn Early-Meideval gold tremissis of 'national civic' series origininating in Northern Frankia (modern France/Belguim), possibly minted at Silvanectis (Senlis, France) by the moneyer 'BABBA' or 'BVBBA', c. AD600.

Obverse: A degraded pearl-diademed, draped and cuirassed bust, facing right. Inscription: "BABBA" (Retrograde) or 'BVBBA'

Reverse: Globe and Cross. Incription: 'SILVATACAN' (starting at 6 o'clock)

Measurements: Weight: 1.34g, Diameter 13.67mm, Thickness: 0.88mm

Discussion: An almost identical coin to this example exists in the collection of the Bibliotheque Nationale, Paris (1992/129 BNF). These two coins appear to be die linked, showing little to no variation between the two. Both coins are attibruted to Northern Frankia although the exact moneyer and mint are uncertain. John Naylor National finds advisor on Early-Medieval coins has suggested, based on similar garbled inscriptions, that the mint named on the coin (Silvatacan) may be a garbling of Silvanectis (Senlis, France). It is not possible to be certain however. Both this coin and 1992/129 BNF share a similar gold fineness between 93%-94% as assesed by Dr Arent Pol using specific gravity measurements.

Notes:

We thank Dr.Pol for both his measurements and for pointing us to the near identical coin 1992/129 BNF.
