An incomplete cast copper-alloy sword or dagger scabbard chape of medieval date c.1100-1200 AD.
Description: The chape is cast in one piece with a transverse fold to produce a symmetrical front and back plate and a U-shaped profile. It is trapezoidal in outline, and would have had projecting sub rectangular arms at each corner, however these are missing. The remnant of a rivet hole can be seen placed centrally on one side of base of the chape. The front is decorated with incisions running horizontally, with one wave shaped incision at the centre. The scabbard is a dark green colour with some lighter patches.
