HARNESS MOUNT

Unique ID: PUBLIC-919C3D

Object type certainty: Probably
Workflow status: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation

Fragment of a cast copper alloy late early-medieval probable harness mount, sub-triangular in plan, with an intact iron rivet at the lobed terminal and openwork decoration which is incomplete at the broken opposite edge which would have expanded into a mount with a right-angled flange at the base with two more rivets. The shape of the terminal appears to be zoomorphic, a stag's head with antlers around the openwork circles on either side of a domed forehead above two recessed eye sockets. The eye sockets are 3 mm in diameter and the antlers around circles that are 5 mm in diameter, protrude 9 mm on either side of the snout. The snout extends 13 mm beyond the eyes and the corroded rivet is 5 mm in diameter and 6 mm in length. The opposite edge has four broken half circles which are 5 mm in diameter and would have been complete circles but now form a spiked edge.
