Object type certainty: Certain
Workflow status: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation

An incomplete copper-alloy pipe tamper combined with 'signet' finger-ring of Post-Medieval date, c.AD 1650 - 1850.

The finger-ring element has a circular hoop with shoulders which flare towards a large ovate bezel. The upper surface of the bezel is undecorated. At the base of the hoop a knopped projection is all that remains of the integral taper stem.

The metal has a dark brownn patina and is worn. The object is 27.9mm long, 26.9mm in diameter at the hoop, the bezel is 13.2mm wide, the base of the stem is 6.7mm in diameter. It weighs 6.2g.

Pipe tampers were used to flatten down tobacco in a pipe in order to ensure that it burnt evenly and drew properly.

Similar pipe tampers incorporating finger-rings have been recorded on the Portable Antiquities Scheme database, for examples see IOW-45378E, BERK-3D22B1; HESH-7E11A4; IOW-9318E7; LVPL-3BD087; LVPL-A563A1; SF-7096BD; SOM-1556F1; SUSS-373EA5; SWYOR-4BBAD6; SWYOR-D0A4F1 and WAW-416CA5.
