Description: Ingot of late early-medieval date, likely to be of silver (not analysed). Oblong with rounded ends, one face is flat. The other is slightly convex and exhibits a series of hammer marks covering the face. The long edges are slightly bevelled.

Dimensions: Length: 26.2mm, width: 7mm, thickness: 4mm, weight: 4.4g.

Discussion: A number of similar ingots have been reported as Treasure and are recorded on the PAS database, including: SF-68844D (2016 T988), WMID-531097 (2010 T335) and NMS-23FFF2 (2005 T455), which states:

"Silver ingots in general were probably used as bullion in payments or trade transactions. Those from the Southern Danelaw most likely date from the late 9th and early 10th century before the 920s, when a dual economy in which both coins and bullion were used came to an end (M Blackburn, "Expansion and control: aspects of Anglo-Scandinavian minting south of the Humber", Vikings and the Danelaw. Select papers from the Proceedings of the Thirteenth Viking Congress, eds. J Graham-Campbell et al. (Oxford, 2001), pp. 125-42)."

WMID-531097 (2010 T335) and NMS-23FFF2 (2005 T455) have both been analysed and confirmed as silver, as have several other ingots recorded on the PAS database.

Date: c. AD 860 - 920.

Notes:

The object contains a minimum of 10% precious metal and is over 300 years old. Consequently, in terms of both age and precious metal content, it qualifies as Treasure under the stipulations of the Treasure Act 1996.
