TOKEN

Unique ID: BERK-001B38

Object type certainty: Certain
Workflow status: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation

A complete post-medieval lead alloy token, dated (AD) 1752. The token is well cast and decorative; one faces bears a five-pointed star or flower with pellets both within and between each petal, while the other side of the token has the initials S (dot) B above an exergue which contains the date 1752. Quite often tokens with dates on have been poorly designed, with numbers and letters appearing the wrong way round. However this is a good quality token and remains in good condition. Leaden tokens or tallies are little understood artefacts; they may have been payment tokens (like 19th / 20th century hop tokens) or some people suggest they could be counting or game pieces.
