A lead alloy spindle whorl of medieval to post medieval date. The object is circular in plan and slightly conical. In the centre of the object the perforation has an internal diameter of 9mm. Each face is decorated with vertical and horizontal, cross-hatching lines, although the decoration is faded and unclear.
One face of the object is decorated with lettering, which is too worn to be read accuratly. If not entirely fictional and imitative, it is possible that the letters may relate to an individual's name, or perhaps are a religious inscription. The object has a light grey patina.
A similar example which has been recorded on the PAS database is LVPL-781838.
Notes:
Spindle whorls have reportedly been found in contexts dated from the Roman through to the Post-Medieval period although the majority are typically dated broadly to the medieval period c.1100-1500.
