Two joining incomplete copper alloy rim fragments from a copper alloy probable posnet or cauldron of Late Medieval to Early Post Medieval dating (AD 1400 -AD 1700).
The rim fragments are sub rectangular, with a sub rectangular cross section. The rim type consists of a rounded lip. The exterior surface is unpolished and shows signs of finishing/filing. The fragment is too small to estimate original rim diameter.
Fragment 1 measures: 24.2 mm in length, 29.4 mm wide and 4.4 mm thick. It weighs 15.2 g.
Fragment 2 measures: 30.0 mm in length, 30.0 mm wide and 4.6 mm thick. It weighs 14.1 g.
Together they measure 30.0 mm in length, 58.0 mm wide and 4.6 mm thick. They weigh 29.2 g.
The fragments are a dark green colour, with an even surface patina. Abrasion, caused by movement whilst within the plough soil, has resulted in a loss of some of the original surface detail.
Body fragments of cast copper alloy cooking vessels are not an unusual find, but are strongly indicative of Medieval and Post Medieval activity in the area. Cooking vessels of this type were in use from as early as AD 1100 and slowly go out of use by 1850, after being superseded by cast iron pots and saucepans (Butler, Green and Payne, 2009, 1).
