A Medieval copper alloy single looped buckle, probably dating to c. AD 1250-1450. The frame is D-shaped in plan, with a narrowed and offset bar and an expanded outside edge, the latter having a slight central waist, forming a rest for the pin. The outside edge is plano-convex in cross section, with the arms and bar being sub-rectangular. The expanded section of the frame is decorated with an incised lattice pattern, whilst the arms are each incised with a series of parallel lines, perpendicular to the length of the buckle.
Dimensions: length 19.4mm; width 23.8mm; thickness 4.0mm; weight 2.97g.
A number of buckles with elaborated outer frames excavated from medieval deposits in London are published by Egan & Pritchard (2002: fig. 46), with contexts dating to c. 1150-1450. Although not exactly fitting any type, the buckle resembles Meols types 8-10, which are more typically dated to the later 13th to early 15th centuries. It appears to be the same type as the incomplete Egan (2007, 107) no.792.
