A cast lead weight of uncertain date, probably Medieval to Post Medieval (AD 1200 - 1800). The weight is sub conical with convex sides and a flat circular base. There is a circular hole running from the centre of the base to the apex, tapering from 4.7mm at the base to 3.6mm at the apex. There is a slight circular groove on the base, half way between the hole and the edge. The bottom corner is rounded. The weight has an even light grey patina. It is 17.7mm tall, 24mm diameter and 48.8g.
The mass is a little under two ounces. If the perforation contained a suspension loop, this would have added to the mass. It is thus likely that the weight was used in the Mercantile or Avoirdupois systems as a 2 ounce weight (Egan, 1998, The Medieval household, page 302). It could either have been suspended or used as a pan weight.
