A complete gold finger ring from the late Post-Medieval period, possibly dating to the Regency era of the early 19th century (c.AD 1795-1837).
The finger ring is a simple band which is decorated on the outside with a floral design. This design consists of a raised circle encircling a smaller circle with a dot inside. Either side of this are sub-circular shapes which represent flower petals. Elements of these sections of the finger ring are repeated with some swirl designs.
The finger ring appears to have been cut or broken and then fixed as on the outer band there is a visible line which the design does not match either side and on the inner band there is a dark flat bump where it has been soldered. This may have been to adjust the size of the finger ring.
It is 2.6g, 19.88mm in diameter and is 1.33mm thick.
The finger ring is in fair condition and is a fairly dull gold colour, with small patches of black.
Notes:
Judy Rudoe (British Museum, BEP) comments that floral patterns gold finger rings with all-over chasing tend to date from the Regency period, thus early 19th century.
As the ring dates to post-1718, and is thus less than 300 years old, it therefore falls outside of the terms of the Treasure Act (1996) .
