SEAL MATRIX

Unique ID: YORYM-965642

Object type certainty: Certain
Workflow status: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation

An incomplete lead alloy medieval seal matrix, dating to the period c.AD 1200-1400. The seal matrix was originally lenticular in plan, but now has a worn break across its upper apex, and significant wear around the edges. The die comprises a central motif of a stylised fleur de lis, the petals of which have a feathery appearance. This is enclosed within an incised border, with an inscription surrounding it. The inscription reads: '[...]WILE', and probably refers to a personal seal of William. The seal matrix is quite worn, with a brown-grey patina on the surface. The reverse is undecorated.

The seal measures 29mm in width, 29.98mm in length, 4.27mm in thickness and weighs 16g.
