A stamped Post Medieval copper alloy finger ring, dating to the late 17th - 19th century.
Description: The finger ring comprises a decorated band with a D-shaped cross-section. The decoration, all in counter-relief, comprises a repeated design of four eight petalled flowers or sunbursts between vertical bars, separated by other curls. These design elements in counter relief create cells that may have contained enamel as on LON-A11C97 which has traces of enamel remaining within in the cells creating a champlevé design. There is a break in the band which is closed and sealed using solder.
Measurements: 22.22mm in diameter, 5.99mm thick (width of band, band is 2.21mm thick) and 4.72g in weight.
Discussion: Rings like this were produced extensively during the Post-Medieval to Modern period, a wide date is often suggested for them. They are seen to have been frequently seen as knick-knacks and keepsakes or even as prizes at fairs. A number of examples on the PAS database have varying date ranges and thus a wide date range is suggested here although later rather than earlier seems likely. LANCUM-4B9494, DENO-7C9143, SUR-AABCE3 and LON-A11C97 are several examples of almost identical designs.
