An incomplete post-Medieval copper-alloy scale knife end-cap (pommel) (1500-1600).

This end cap is trapezoidal in plan and sub-rectangular in cross-section. Viewed in plan, the top is curved and each end would have risen slightly prior to being broken. The sides taper in slightly towards the bottom. In side view, it is an inverted 'V'-shape. There are the remains of a corroded iron tang on the underside. Each larger (opposite) face is decorated with a grooved grid pattern. However, the pattern is now barely visible due to corrosion.

This end-cap is reddish brown with light green and drab green patches.

Height: 13.0mm; width: 18.7mm; thickness: 7.2mm. Weight: 6.45g.

Compare with a similar knife end-caps which have a clearer grid pattern: IOW-1EAD14 and HAMP-71636E.

Geake (2001: 76) states that such solid end-caps can come in the form of horses' hooves or stylised fleurs-de-lis and date to the sixteenth century.

Other examples of end-caps can be found illustrated in Read 2001: 88, fig. 56).
