STUD

Unique ID: IOW-3EF352

Object type certainty: Certain
Workflow status: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation

An incomplete post-Medieval copper-alloy stud or mount with a 'flower' design on the upper face of the head (c. 1500-c. 1600).

In plan, this stud has a sub-circular domed head with moulded decoration on the upper face. Originally, the head would have had six lobes around the head but these are missing due to breaks. The integrally cast tapering shank at the rear is square in cross-section. Decoration on the upper face consists of a central raised pellet, surrounded by six evenly spaced pellets. There were probably other pellets forming a border before being broken. The back of the head is flat.

The stud is corroded and the breaks are probably old. The tip of the shank is missing due to a break.

Maximum diameter of head: 7.3mm; minimum diameter of head: 6.9mm; height of head: 1.5mm; overall height including shank: 8.4mm. Weight: 0.45g.
