An incomplete Roman copper-alloy Colchester derivative 'initial' T-shaped, Dorset type bow brooch (AD 50-150).

The pin is missing and the chain/head loop is largely missing.

The tubular wings taper slightly towards their ends. However, the top of the wings are flat. At the rear of the wings a slot to accommodate a pin loop is off-centre. Close to the bow the wings have a diameter of about 4.4mm. Each outer end has a small portion missing and is abraded. The wings enclose the remains of an axis bar but the type of metal it is made from is uncertain. At the head of the brooch there are stubs of a chain/head loop which has a width of 7.0mm. At the front of the bow, beneath the head/chain loop, a plain flat panel projects outwards at an angle of about 10°. The width of the panel at the top is 10.2mm. From this panel the sides of the bow taper inwards towards the foot. Close to the foot, the width is 4.5mm. Beneath the plain panel the bow has three vertical flutes or grooves with two horizontal ribs or ridges below. The vertical grooves appear to have punched decoration but due to corrosion it is unclear. Between the horizontal ribs and the foot, the bow is plain. The foot is semi-circular as viewed from the bottom and protrudes forwards. The base of the foot is plain. The rear of the bow is flat and plain and has a catch-plate, 21.5mm in length. The curled-over part that retained the pin tip is missing.

This brooch is green and corroded with traces of a white metal coating.

Length: 60.4mm; width of wings: 29.3mm; thickness of bow: 1.7mm; width of foot: 5.8mm. Weight: 9.16g.

A very similar brooch from Richborough, but without a chain/head loop, has been published (Bayley and Butcher 2004: 158, fig. 127, ref: T 124).

Similar brooches have been published (Hattatt 1989: 304, fig, 163, refs: 400, 401 and 922).
