A Post-medieval ceramic fragment uncertain function, probably structural and decorative, probably dating to c. AD 1700-1800+. North Devon Gravel-tempered ware fabric. A sub-rectangular ceramic fragment, rectangular in cross section and with a potentially up-curving projection from one of its short sides. The projection and one edge are broken, with relatively laminar, unabraded breaks. The fabric is hard fired, oxidised pink-orange with a reduced grey core, containing an abundant, sub-angular quartz temper (<3.0mm). All surviving surfaces (including both faces) are white-slipped and glazed, with foliate motifs, consisting of a pair of leaves, incised through the slip, appearing yellow-brown on yellow.
Dimensions: length 84.6mm; width 50.0mm; thickness 27.0mm; weight 117.49g.
Whilst its thickness and form would suggest the fragment is structural, that it is decorated on all faces would preclude its use as a tile. The fabric is typical of North Devon gravel tempered ware, and the use of a lead glaze over a white slip with incised decoration would probably suggest an 18th century date, or later.
