Cast copper alloy thimble, bent out of shape in plan so that it is no longer circular, but still slightly conical in profile with a rounded crown. The thimble is complete but flattened on one side with worn patches around the outer surface and a small tear at the base where it has been crushed into a point. There is a plain raised border around the base that is 2.3 mm in depth, and above this the thimble is covered with drilled irregular circular pits, spaced at five per cm in circumferential rings. At the crown at the top of the dome the pits have been spaced in pairs like petals around a central pair to produce a rosette shape. The thimble is of a heavy-duty type, made of metal that is around 2 mm thick at the base.
Egan (2010) illustrates similar thimbles on p.267, fig.206, nos.830-831, dating from c.1400-1450.
Read (1988) illustrates a similar example on p.76, no.431, which is dated from the 15th century.
