Lead spindle whorl. A cast whorl of plano-convex section with a central moulded aperture of diameter 6.9mm, cf. Walton Rogers form A1; patinated. Traces of equidistantly spaced radial ribs appear on the convex surface, along with a single neatly incised line. The mass may suggest a primary function spinning a yarn, while the small aperture size may point to an Anglo-Saxon date. Against this, the appearance of radial decoration is a feature more usually associated with larger biconical whorls of the early post-medieval period, and those 'one sided' versions cast from them as copies. Suggested date: probably Early Medieval, 700-850.
