A complete and worn copper-alloy coin weight for the spur ryal (16 shillings) of James I (1603-1625), dating to the Second Coinage revaluation period, 1612-1619. Withers and Withers 1995: 13 and 38.

Obverse: Crowned XVIs/VId.

Reverse: Sun symbol with radiating rays, alternating lions and fleurs-de-lis within a tressure of arches, all within a beaded circle.

The edges are bevelled at the front.

This coin weight is generally corroded but has a green patina in places.

Length: 16.6mm; width: 16.0mm; thickness: 3.4mm. Weight: 6.12g. (94.4 grains).

Withers and withers (1995, 38) write that 'weights bearing this symbol are for the spur ryal, so called because the symbol resembles a spur. The object at the centre is a rose; lions and lis complete the design'.
