An incomplete copper alloy early post medieval one piece toggle clasp, dating to the period AD 1500-1650.

This is Read Type 1 of an unclassified toggle clasp group. It has broken away from the rest of the clasp at an early date. The extant plate consists of an open work and moulded design of one central circular perforation. The top horizontal edge of the object is decorated with a series of transverse lines, giving a rope like effect. Below this the body of the item shows a transverse groove. An iron rivet which is heavily corroded, but still in place, is located above the open work design. There would have been a second one just below the circular perforation but the plate has broken at that point. The longer edges of the plate are decorated with small wing or leaf shapes, three on each side surrounding the central hole.

The length of the object is 21.56mm, the width is 17.11mm, the thickness is 2.14mm and the weight is 2.40g. There is a strong green colour on parts of the upper surface.

See Read (2008) "Hooked-clasps and eyes. A classification and Catalogue of Sharp- or Blunt-Hooked Clasps and Miscellaneous Hooks, Eyes, Loops, Rings and Toggles" page 209, No. 754 for similar.
