BUCKLE

Unique ID: SF-AD92C3

Object type certainty: Certain
Workflow status: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation

A complete cast copper-alloy and iron double looped 'spectacle' type buckle dating to the Post-Medieval period, c. 1550-1650. The frame is of copper-alloy, consisting two sub-oval loops joined by a central strap bar. The strap bar itself and one loop are now clogged with orange ferrous corrosion products which probably represent the remains of the plate and pin. Preserved in fair condition with an uneven brownish patina, it measures 19.84mm long down the strap bar, 22.95mm wide across the loops, and 3.27mm thick at the midpoint of the frame. It weighs 3.46g.

For a comparable buckle frame see Whitehead (2003) fig. 291 passim.
