An inscribed gold and enamel posie/posy ring of Post-Medieval date.

Description: The ring is small and has an even band, the outer band has am even vegetative floral design including palmettes. The palmettes were executed in white while some of the vine designs have small amounts of green enamel adhering possibly indicating a white and green pattern.

The internal band has the incised inscription 'I give it thee, to thinke on mee' this is followed by a stamped 'R' in a square topped shield. The ring is partially abraded with nicks out of the band.

Measurements: 16.21mm in diameter, 2.85mm thick and 1g in weight.

Discussion: The inscription on this ring is recorded on a posie/posy prior to 1633 (Evans 1931, 52). The general form of the lettering on this example would however suggest a later date with lettering executed as block capitals being earlier and developing through lower case and to cursive and italic during the course of the 17th century and into the 18th. Based on this a late 17th to early 18th century seems probable. The 'R' stamp is very similar to that found on a mourning ring in the collection of the British Museum (AF.1554) which is dated c.1682-1697, and a posy ring found in Coaley, Gloucestershire (2017 T1110) broadly dated as c.1650-1750.

Conclusion: It is therefore not possible to be certain this this ring dates to before 1719 and so despite the object being made of more than 10% precious metals, it does not constitute potential Treasure under the stipulations of The Treasure Act 1996.

Inscription: I give it thee, to thinke on mee R
