HARNESS PENDANT

Unique ID: IOW-5BEE22

Object type certainty: Certain
Workflow status: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation

An almost complete and damaged Medieval copper-alloy harness mount and pendant (c. 1175-c. 1300).

A small piece of the pendant is missing.

The mount is sub-rectangular in plan with a semi-circular end and a slot down the centre, bent back through 180° to form a fold at the base. The fold holds a copper-alloy rod or axis bar from which the pendant is suspended. The mount is now bent but was probably slightly convex at the front and slightly concave at the rear. At the rear, close to the top of the mount, there is an integral tapering spike or rivet with a sharp point. This spike is circular in cross-section and close to the plate the diameter is 2.7mm. The plain pendant is sub-oval in plan, convex at the front and concave at the rear. A long arm tapers towards the suspension loop. The hole itself has some wear. Between the sub-oval plate and the tapering arm there is a deep transverse groove.

This harness set is purplish and has no patina. There are some buff deposits. It may have been gilded. However, none has survived.

Mount: length: 18.8mm; width: 10.0mm; thickness: 2.5mm; thickness including spike: 9.4mm.

Pendant: length: 29.0mm; width: 10.7mm; thickness: 2.7mm.

Overall length: 43.6mm. Overall weight: 3.09g.
