Probable fragment of a copper alloy early Saxon great square headed brooch. Irregular broken rectangular shape with a medial rib running down the longest axis. The rib is decorated along its length with a double column of small circular punches. The plate remnants flanking the rib are chip carved with curving lines interrupted by a folded almond-shaped loop intruding from either side. The reverse has a truncated longitudinally aligned perpendicular rectangular tag positioned along one side, probably the remains of the catchplate. There is substantial iron corrosion encrustation on the reverse, suggesting the iron pin. Circa AD 525-570.
Length 24mm, width 19mm, thickness 7.2mm including tag.
