An incomplete cast copper alloy Colchester derivative, hinged (dolphin) type brooch dating to the Roman period (c. AD 55 - 100). The surviving parts of the brooch include the wings, head and part of the bow. The foot, catchplate and pin are all missing.

The tips of the wings have a slight collar around each terminal. The bow also has a raised central ridge extending from the top, just below the head, down towards where the foot would have been. The inside of the wings are hollow and tubular and would have held the pin mechanism. There is a central slot in the middle of the head where the pin would have extended.

A similar example can be seen on the database: ESS-6FD079.

The overall dimensions are as follows: 17.97mm in length, 21.29mm in width, 9.22mm in thickness and 4.66g in weight.

Class: Colchester derivative, hinged
Sub class: Mackreth 2011, Chapter 3, Part 4, Group 5.b.
