An incomplete copper-alloy Headstud Brooch of Roman date (AD 75-200). The head of the brooch comprises double stepped, rectangular wings, the reverse of which are concave. The back of the wings and head retain the remains of an integral lug and upper projecting forward curved hook which would have held the pin mechanism.
The front of the wings are decorated with three alternating ridge and grooves, giving a stepped effect, and an integral rectangular sectioned bow extends centrally from between the wings tapering in width towards the foot. An integral raised headstud is present at the apex of the bow and has a raised central boss. Below the headstud the upper surface of the bow is decorated with a series of eleven recessed rectangular cells. The reverse is flat and undecorated. Four of the cells retain a red coloured enamel inlay within them. The foot is double stepped and circular. The catchplate is broken and largely missing with only a short projection retained.

Length: 47.13mm Width: 16.48mm, Thickness: 6.87mm, Weight: 9.2g.

The metal is a light green in colour with areas of brown and a pitted patina.

Similar examples are illustrated in Hattatt, p.332, fig.191 and date to the 2nd Century AD.
