An incomplete, post medieval, lead and iron, toy pistol, AD.1600-1750. The object comprises the firing mechanism, stock and barrel of a toy gun. It is primarily cast in lead or a lead alloy with some iron parts for the mechanism. The stock has a flat butt and tapers up towards the mechanism and the barrel. Both sides of the stock are decorated with foliate design. The trigger has been lost. The mechanism is attached to the stock on the left side of the gun by three iron screws. Forward of this is the powder pan, this is circular and has the touch hole preserved. The pan sits atop the barrel in contrast to a full size pistol where it would normally sit to the side, though box-lock pistols of the 18th-19th century have the pan in this position. The barrel of the toy is very short, projecting only 8mm forward of the pan.
This is a firing toy, and would have taken small powder charges. It is unlikely that it could have been charged sufficiently to have caused any damage, nor could it have been fired with any accuracy.
Other examples of this type of toy can be found in NLM-D49553, PUBLIC-E65988 and SUR-9EB4AA
