Silver Venetian soldino of one of the Doges of Venice, Leonardo Loredan, issued from 1501-1521 in Venice, Type 9.

Soldinos were known as the galyhalpens (galley-halfpence) as they were brought into the country by the annual Venetian trading fleets. The soldino was about the size of English halfpennies and was popular because of a contemporary lack of small change; soldini in fact occur as English finds more often than proper halfpennies of the period.
