An incomplete Iron Age copper alloy brooch of La Tene 1B, c. 400-200 BC. The surviving portion of the brooch comprises of the bow and catchplate, missing the foot, chord and pin.
The bow is highly arched and plano-convex in cross section, 9.8mm wide and 4.3mm thick at the mid point. Above the bow narrows and terminates in a worn, patinated break, with similar below, but with an integral catchplate projecting out to the right. The bow is decorated with a central longitudinal groove, probably with incised transverse lines running down its length (obscured by corrosion). The overall length is 33.3mm, it weighs 4.61g.
Hawkes and Hull (1987: plates 28-30) illustrate a number of brooches of similar form and decoration, identified as their type 1B, although its fragmentary nature would suggest caution should be applied.
