A cast lead, or lead alloy, spindle whorl of Roman to Post Medieval date (AD1 - 1650). In plan the spindle whorl is sub-circular. There is a circular perforation which is 8.9 mm diameter which is located in the centre of the whorl. Both faces of the object are very worn so it is difficult to establish if there was originally any decoration. The surfaces of the spindle whorl are a light cream colour. The faces are uneven, possibly due to damage in the plough soil.
Spindle whorls are used for a long period of time and decorated examples are thought to date to the medieval to post-medieval periods. However, this example is very worn and is very difficult to date precisely without other evidence (such as pottery).
The spindle whorl measures 27.8 mm diameter, is 8.8 mm thick and weighs 24 grams
