A complete copper-alloy strap end of Early-Medieval date, c.AD 750 - 950. The strap end is of Thomas' Class A, Type 1 with zoomorphic terminal and Trewhiddle style decoration. The strap end is sub-ovate with a zoomorphic terminal at the closed end and an open split terminal at the attachment end.

The zoomorphic terminal is in the form of a forward facing animal head with moulded features including semi-circular ears, ovate eyes, and a split snub-nosed snout. The central panel bears an interlaced Trewhiddle style beast design in relief against a single recessed sub-rectangular field with a white metal inlay. The beasts are in the form of two interlaced crouching quadrupeds. The attachment end retains two worn rivets which flank an incised fan-like trilobite design.

The reverse of the strap end is flat and undecorated.

The metal has a dark green patina and is worn. The strap end is 36.5mm long, 11.4mm wide, 4.9mm thick and weighs 5.3g.

Late Anglo Saxon and Viking strap ends have been classified into several types by Thomas with this example fitting into Thomas' Class A, Type 1 dating broadly from the 8th to 9th centuries. Strap ends are a common Early-Medieval find though this type is thought to be particularly typical of the 9th century due to its representation within coin hoards as well as its stylistically diagnostic features.
