SEAL MATRIX

Unique ID: SUSS-AFDBCD

Object type certainty: Certain
Workflow status: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation

A complete, lead, medieval, seal matrix, AD.1200-1450. The object comprises a circular seal matrix with a small subrectangular tab attacted to the side. The object is flat with the design and legend impressed in reverse on to the front face. The design itself is a cruciform of pointed oval petals separated in the angles by an incised line topped with three pellets. The legend on the front is clear reading, +S' WIL'I FIL' LE VEDOT. There is also the start of a legend on the rear of the piece, again in reverse, perhaps where the seal matrix has been made from a recycled test piece. The rear legend reads, +S':P[N?]. There is a crack running through the piece, possibly post depositional damage. The tab attached to the side has been nearly pierced from the rear, presumably to act as a suspension loop, though it has not gone through completely.

See also SUSS-AF8DAB, where there is a similar central design.

Inscription: +S' WIL'I FIL' LE VEDOT
