An incomplete white metal, probably pewter button, of Post Medieval dating (AD 1600 to AD 1700)>
Around 50% of the button is present, consisting only of the head. The attachment loop is missing.
The head of the button is domed with a circular base. The reverse is flat. The front of the button has been decorated with a moulded double rose, with a circular border at the base. The remains of the attachment loop can be seen on the back, as two circular depressions.
The button has a diameter of 10.3 mm and is 6.7 mm thick. It weighs 3.0 g.
The button is a dark grey colour, with an even surface patina. Although it is silver like in appearance, consensus among colleagues at Birmingham Museums Trust is that it is a white metal, most likely pewter. This metallic composition has not been confirmed using the XRF equipment.
A similar silvered copper alloy button has been recorded on the PAS database as SWYOR-E36CAB, and is considered to be 17th Century in dating.
