A complete but slightly damaged post-Medieval copper-alloy whistle (c. 1800-c.1880).

The barrel tapers from the terminal towards the mouth-piece with sound holes on opposite sides nearer to the narrow end. There is a soldered seam along the full length of the barrel or tube. The terminal end is in the form of a domed cap. Between the cap and the barrel a pronounced collar has circumferential 'beading' on the outer edge. There is similar circumferential beading on the cap as well as comma-like motifs. At the centre of the cap there is a separate copper-alloy wire loop which is attached to free running copper-alloy suspension loop. This flat suspension loop is circular in plan with an outer diameter of 11.8mm. Just inside the dented mouth-piece there are the remains of an iron 'baffle'

This whistle is deep reddish brown with flecks of rich green patina. The iron 'baffle' is corroded.

Length: 46.4mm; diameter of collar: 16.4mm. Weight: 10.46g.
