A complete Medieval to post-Medieval copper-alloy domed ('beehive') closed thimble (c. 1400-c. 1550).
This thimble is circular in plan and the thick walls taper inwards from the base towards the crown. There is a plain rim and no manufacturing marks. The outer face has a line of evenly spaced sub-circular indentations/drilled pits which spiral in an anti-clockwise from the base to the top including the crown.
The outer face of this thimble is reddish brown green copper-alloy corrosion products. The inside is smooth with corrosion products.
Height: 21.0mm; diameter: 20.0mm; thickness of walls: 1.1mm. Weight: 9.67g.
This style of thimble is commonly known as a beehive thimble and has been dated to c. 1400-1550 by Holmes (1988), page 1, Fig 2(b). Holmes suggests that this style is consistent with being a 'heavy duty' type.
