POWDER MEASURE

Unique ID: IOW-4869F8

Object type certainty: Certain
Workflow status: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation

An incomplete and slightly misshapen post-Medieval lead alloy powder measure cap used for measuring a charge of gunpowder (c. 1600-c. 1700). Courtney 1988: 2, fig. 3.

The open end is circular in plan and the closed end is sub-oval in plan.

It is sub-rectangular in side view and the rim is slightly thickened. The two loops are missing but there are breaks where they were situated.

This measure is grey.

Height: 19.0mm; width: 23.3mm; thickness of walls: 1.3mm. Weight: 16.68g.

The loops enabled the cap to be attached separately to the bandolier (belt) of the wearer so that they could be removed without the possibility of being dropped and lost. The measure would have held enough powder for a complete charge for the weapon. A series of these measures were attached to the bandolier.
