An incomplete 14th century twisted copper-alloy wire object, probably a bracelet.
Description: The bracelet remains in a distorted and incomplete condition, roughly U-shaped in plan. It consists of thick twisted wire coiled around a central piece of wire. There is terminals of very tight twisted wire at the end of the coil. The central wire projects past these terminals and one end has twisted loop as simple fastening method. a flat pierced circular disc is around the wire near the fastening loop. The object is a light green mottled with brown.
Measurements: Total (uncoiled remaining) length 168mm long, 6.3mm thick and 9.7g in weight.
Discussion: The coiled twisted wire style that this bracelet is produced in appears to be popular in the 14th century and is used to produce a number of different jewellery types including bracelets (Egan and Pritchard 1991, 254-256, Fig 164 nos.1339-41) and hair pins (Egan and Pritchard 1991, 294-295, Fig 196). A similar 14th century date is therefore suggested.
