An incomplete and very worn Post-Medieval copper-alloy gilt dagger hilt fitting and guard, probably of 17th or 18th century date.
Description: The hilt is roughly t-shaped in plan, the body is hollow and is rectangular cross-section. Both ends expand slightly and have flared rims; the bottom rectangular end has a shallower rim. The top rim is formed from a flat oval disc horizontally placed on top of the hilt. The main body of the hilt is slightly wasted and has moulded relief decoration on each face that appears to be an heraldic device possibly a lion rampant.
The arms which formed the hand guard are attached each side of the fitting, just below the top and integrally cast. The two long straight arms of the T, terminate at knobs, one bending upwards , the other downwards now broken. These bifurcate, the narrower lower of which curves in a loop downwards, only short lengths remain, from the historic breaks.
The metal is brownish-purple in colour with some patches of dark green patination.
Measurements: The length is 80mm, the width is 40mm and the weight 53.47g.
Discussion: There are Similar examples with different decoration that can be found on the PAS database ~ KENT-C53613, BH-BCFFA3, DUR-1B4737 , WILT-3BFB65 and SUSS-9BE872 .
