COIN WEIGHT

Unique ID: SOM-06E5BD

Object type certainty: Certain
Workflow status: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation

A complete uniface coin weight for a German dukat (or ducat) of Post-Medieval date, AD 1500-1700. The object is square and flat with one side stamped with a design of a standing figure of St. Ladislaus holding an orb in his left hand and a short axe in his right hand. Made in Germany or the Low Countries. The coin weight is 13.5mm long, 13.9mm wide, 2.4mm thick and weighs 3.20g

A similar example is illustrated in Withers & Withers (2011: 29) and dated to the 16th to 17th centuries. Paul Withers has commented on a similar weight (YORYM-FAA9A3) that coin weights for the Hungarian ducat generally bear the initials HD (Hungarian Ducat) while weights from Germany can sometimes have the maker's initials on them instead.

This example is unsual as the axe is held in the figure right hand (on left as vviewed) and has a relatively short handle. Most example on PAS have a long hangdled axe held in the left hand.
