An incomplete copper-alloy Anglo-Saxon (early medieval) sleeve clasp of 6th century date. It is sub-rectangular in shape and with a curved profile. On the front face it has a central plain panel running lengthwise between a pair of raised lines, which have a series of four lobes flanking their outer edges. Between the lobes, where they touch the raised lines, there is a row of three circular holes on each side. The back face of the plate is plain. There are signs of old breaks, now worn, in one of the corners and possibly, in one of the short sides. Length: 34.79 mm, width: 24.00 mm, thickness: 2.26 mm, weight: 7.70 g
The best parallel for this sleeve clasp is Hines form B18c (1993 pp. 59-60, fig. 113). It could be the hook plate but there are no signs of an attaching hook. The signs of old worn breaks indicate that this could also have possibly been a Hines form B18h originally (1993, p. 63, fig. 121) but, in addition to the problem of the missing hook, in the latter example the sewing holes are placed in between the outer edges of the lobes instead of the inner ones therefore this seems less likely.
