BROOCH

Unique ID: LIN-9F8BCD

Object type certainty: Certain
Workflow status: Published Find published

An incomplete copper alloy Colchester derivative, hinged brooch dating to the Roman period (c. AD 55-100). The brooch is in two parts and both were recovered very close together in the same field.

The head of the brooch has two short wings with a recess in the centre on the reverse to accommodate the, now missing, pin. The bow extends from the head of the brooch at a steep curve and after this the brooch has broken. The second piece of the brooch comprises the rest of the bow that tapers down to the foot. On the reverse the remains of a catchplate are apparent. There are no signs of decorative features and the patina is a greenish brown.

The overall dimensions are as follows:

Head: 12.89mm in length, 20.18mm in width, 7.88mm in thickness and 4.89g in weight.

Bow: 30.07mm in length, 4.85mm in width, 8.33mm in thickness and 3.69g in weight.

Class: Colchester derivative, hinged
