A cast copper alloy oval setting containing an opaque blue glass intaglio, with a trace of a red border around the edge of intaglio and a bevelled edge to the copper alloy frame. The red material is probably setters wax, made of shellac and turpentine or resin, which was used to hold the glass intaglio within the frame. There is a trace of white substance on the edges of the frame of the intaglio, perhaps lead solder. The intaglio depicts a bust of a head facing right. The image appears to be a male head wearing a wig with layers of curls, that is tied at the back of the head, and with a scalloped collar on the shoulders. The back of the setting is recessed with a square sectioned rim within which is a layer of more setters wax that was used to attach the setting to a larger object, possibly a key or watch fob. The intaglio measures 16.25 mm in length, 14.5 mm in width, and 2.5 mm in thickness.
Similar intaglios on the database include LEIC-49DEF6, FAKL-B996C0 and LIN-DEEA80 which have been dated from the 18th to the 19th century. In this instance the detail of the bust suggests that it is probably Georgian.
