Fragment of a Roman copper-alloy Trumpet brooch, dating to the period c. 75 - 175 AD. The fragment consists of the lower half of the brooch: at the top is an acanthus knob that would have originally marked the mid-point of the bow. This is formed of three registers: the upper and lower registers take the form of three sub-rectangular leaves arranged in a transverse line. The middle register is a flat ridge. The knob is broadly D-shaped, protruding from the front of the bow while remaining flat at the back. Below the acanthus knob is a narrowed collar, terminated by two parallel ridges that run around the bow. A triangular catchplate extends from this point from the back of the bow; the point of the triangle bends round to one side. A small ridge runs from the bottom of the catchplate to the foot of the brooch. The bow is triangular in section, with a flat back face and a faceted front face. At the foot, the bow is angled forwards. The rough end of the foot suggests that a foot knob has broken off. The brooch fragment has a dark brown and green patina. It is 39.76mm in length, 11.91mm at maximum width and 10.08mm at maximum thickness and weighs 8.19g.
