Medieval (late 14th to early 16th century) annular buckle: In plan, the copper alloy buckle frame is sub-circular and is sub-oval in section. The frame is undecorated. There is an cast copper alloy pin curled around the frame which is sub-rectangular in section, but the underside is slightly hollow and tapers to the tip. The frame has signs of wear on the interior edge on opposite edges, thereby enhancing the overall oval shape to the frame.
The surface of the frame is in fair condition and has a light green/brown patina.
The buckle frame measures 26.78mm long, 24.23mm wide and 5.72mm thick at the pin loop. It weighs 3.61g.
Similar buckles are illustrated in Egan and Pritchard (2002), for example No. 44 which is also a particularly small example. Egan and Pritchard (2002:57) comment that these frames, without constrictions for the pin are considered to be buckles, and those with a constriction are brooches. They date to the late 14th to early 16th century.
