An incomplete copper-alloy Aucissa variant brooch of Roman date, c.AD 43 - 100. The head of the brooch is rolled; formed from a flat, rectangular panel which splits into two at the back and rolls down and round to form the integral hinge which retains an axis bar. The loop of a pin remains around the bar but the pin proper is lost to a worn break.
The front of the head tapers into a narrow circular sectioned bow which extends with a curved and distorted profile. The bow terminates in a circular foot knop and the remains of an integral catchplate extend to the reverse
The metal has a mid-green patina and is worn. The brooch is 31.7mm long, 13.8mm wide, 3.1mm thick and weighs 4.7g.
A similar example is illustrated in Hattatt, p.318, fig.177, no.838.
